Alec Baldwin questioned in Staten Island car crash investigation

Actor Alec Baldwin was questioned in an investigation into a car crash that left a pedestrian critically injured, but has not been charged, officials said.

On Monday afternoon, Baldwin was pulled over by police in Staten Island after an accident in which a woman in her 20s was critically injured after an SUV hit her. Police said the driver who hit the woman, who police have not identified, was “provisionally identified as” Baldwin.

Baldwin, who is familiar to New York City audiences for his role as Mayor Jack Donaghy on “30 Rock,” was taken into custody but later released. An NYPD spokesman said he would be meeting with police investigators in the morning.

The accident happened a day after the 42-year-old actor was publicly criticized for making anti-Trump remarks while showing off a replica gold-plated gun on Twitter. He also reportedly flirted with a journalist who works for the Daily Mail during an event at the New York Public Library, a moment caught on camera and posted online.

Baldwin “has indicated he is not involved in any accidents,” a spokeswoman for Baldwin said in a statement.

“This is a completely unfounded allegation,” she said. “Mr. Baldwin has been cooperative with the police throughout their investigation and will continue to cooperate at this time.”

One law enforcement official who was not authorized to speak publicly said Baldwin was questioned by investigators for several hours but was released and never put in handcuffs. Another source said that detectives were surprised at the allegation that Baldwin was in the car.

“The time frame seems too early,” the second source said.

On Tuesday, Mayor Bill de Blasio, also not identified, issued a statement in which he said the city was offering a $10,000 reward for information about the accident.

“Our hearts go out to all who have been affected by this unfortunate incident, and we want everyone to know that we are working diligently to get answers,” he said.
