Josh Dorner bought a round of golf on Saturday with the man he says gave him the NFL’s single-game record for receiving yards in a game. As Tom Brady is a football-playing celebrity, we’re sure Dorner would have preferred a much better present than the unfortunate Steve Smith, who delivered the 600th TD pass in NFL history to Brady and his New England Patriots in the first quarter of their 38-28 AFC Divisional Playoff win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Smith answered the call for a postgame golf lesson with Disney golf professional Mario Scalise and Dorner, from Myrtle Beach, S.C., said he took a photo with his hands on the Tom Brady golf bag, which Dorner dropped in the pond at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill. which Dorner said was his most prized possession, according to WBZ-TV in Boston.
“I got the ball at the end, didn’t want to lose it,” Dorner said. “I told him, ‘It wasn’t your fault, you’re a good ball catcher.’”
Dorner is especially close to Massachusetts because he grew up a Red Sox fan but became a Patriots fan when he spent a year in Boston. His favorite player is Deion Branch, and he met him before the 2003 Super Bowl and later was briefly roommates with receiver Ed Werder. Werder, who had a touchdown pass in his career, donated one to Dorner during the game when the two were caught cashing in on the historic ball.
So the real question is: Would you trade in your Wade Boggs jersey for a small round of golf?
