ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia — Radamel Falcao scored three times and Marseille beat Manchester City 4-3 on aggregate on Tuesday to advance to the Champions League semifinals for the first time since 2005.
Pogba came off the bench in the second half and gave Manchester City a lifeline, scoring from close range in the 72nd minute.
“The last 10 minutes were crucial in a way we were flat,” City coach Pep Guardiola said. “We lost Falcao. We changed the tempo of the game with this substitution.”
With 10 minutes left, City came even closer to a comeback. Jesus forced goalkeeper Steve Mandanda into a dive to punch away a close-range shot from Fernandinho. But he also looked offside.
Falcao, who turned 33 on Tuesday, took his tally for the season to 24, eight of them in the Champions League. “I’m so happy to continue my career in Europe,” he said.
Guido Carrillo got Marseille off to the perfect start after four minutes, dancing through the center of the defense and finding the bottom corner with a crisp shot from 12 meters (yards).
John Guidetti drew the ball off Andre Ayew to level in the 13th. Ayew earned a penalty when fouled by Nicolas Otamendi, the in-form forward’s second spot kick in two matches, after his successful conversion in the previous round.
But Karim Rekik beat City keeper Willy Caballero to regain the lead in the 18th.
United States international Brooks headed the second in the first half for Marseille, after former Arsenal winger Mathieu Flamini had given the French club the lead at the end of the first leg last week.
“I expected a tough game, and it was,” Cisse said. “All the players gave it everything and fought for each other until the end.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic doubled the lead in the 53rd with his first goal in five matches for United, but Lucas Perez then scored an 82nd-minute volley to bring the visitors back to within one.
Marseille held on with 10 men after Ibrahimovic had a goal ruled out for handball, the veteran striker’s 70th minute shot hitting the arm of Fernandinho.
The win ends a miserable run for the team that won the French league in 2012 and reached the last 16 of the Champions League the previous four seasons.
“We didn’t deserve to lose this match,” Caballero said. “We played very well. I wish to go to the next round.”
Marseille was without its top scorer Vincent Aboubakar, who was cup-tied after playing for Cameroon in the African Cup of Nations.
City is in the final four for the second season in a row, while Marseille will play in the semifinals for the first time since losing to Juventus four years ago.
