Toronto hospitals’ forced vaccine policy is in trouble

Unvaccinated workers and those who didn’t receive a COVID-19 vaccine are challenging the Toronto hospital network’s policy mandating that all staff be vaccinated against coronavirus infection. According to a new report from The Globe and Mail, the hospitals are sending employees a letter telling them that the policy is mandatory. The letter, which could be called draconian and discriminatory, states that employees must have acquired an approved degree of vaccination or proof of immunization before they would work in the hospital or at its patient-care facility, the public health unit and the hospital hospitals’ transportation service. The Globe and Mail says that 15 to 18 employees have so far received the letter, and if they do not abide by the policy, they could face disciplinary action and possible termination. The chief executive of North York General Hospital and the University Health Network, David McKeown, did not respond to requests for comment from The Globe and Mail. However, in an interview with CBC, McKeown said: “We are obligated as a public health authority to move forward with a vaccination program that will protect patients in our care.”
